... before the summer crowds realize it's open!
β
β
Gone are the days where I'd be trekking over for Governor's Ball... surely one day my Little One will know I used to have a cool life, right?!
That being said, now I love heading over to Governor's Island with my Little One on an early Sunday morning!
Before you go...
- Bring your Little One's mini scooter
- Pack your usual snacks and water
- Reserve tickets on their website. On the weekends before 11am, tickets are free and afterwards they are $5 for adults. We've always got tickets, but I don't think anyone has ever checked that we have tickets!
What time to go...
- Head over before 10am to avoid the chaotic crowds to get on the ferry
Getting there...
- Before the season officially starts, the only way across the water is the Governors Island Ferryβ
- HOT TIP: When you get on the boat, stay downstairs instead of walking up the stairs to the top of the boat. If you go upstairs it will take you forever to get off the boat via the one small staircase on the other side.
Walking around...
- The best part is that you can't get lost on an island! Just start walking
- At some point, head to Governors Island Playground for an awesome kids swing (pictured). Besides the swing, the playground is probably best for older kids, but you'll also see a park of hammocks close by and a great place to chill
Where to eat...
- βMakina: Great for fries! We didn't order much else, but it's a great spot to sit and watch everyone in the park. They also play great music for the millennials!
- βLittle Evas: We didn't eat here, but it looked great to stop at and is right next to Governors Island Playground
Now for the bathrooms...
-
The bathroom situation on Governors Island isn't phenomenal, but it's much better than years past. My two go-to locations are:
- A decent porta potty truck that isn't too far from Governors Island Playground
- The indoor bathroom right where the ferry lands on Governors Island
- When in doubt, bring a portable potty for the Little Ones, because when they want to go, it may be a bit of a trek to find one quickly
I definitely recommend heading over to Governors Island before the season officially starts on Memorial Day weekend. You know how I feel about crowds...
