Shake it off... with sprinkles!

Ever since I moved to New York 17 years ago, it's been a long standing tradition to take myself to Clinton Street Baking Company (the original one!) to treat myself to banana walnut pancakes. Admittedly I have missed some years since my Little One came along...

Last Sunday we woke up and had no plans, so I got my Little One up and we headed to the M15 bus at 8:30am! Surprisingly, we were already late by the time we got there at 9am and had a 40 minute wait... which then triggered the following sequence of events

Our Sunday Timeline:

  • Koneko Cat Cafe: It allegedly opened at 9am and it was a few doors down from Clinton Street, perfect right? No.... of course the guy opening up (I dare say a Gen Z'er), was 20 minutes late, so we waited patiently.. finally I just asked him if we could go in, to which he responded "Ugh...there's no point, come back at 11am when the cats come out"... so welcoming...

  • Ludlow Coffee Supply: I decided I needed coffee to tackle people, so we head over there and grabbed a sunlit seat by the window (see picture). Sure I plonked the ipad in front of my Little One, but it was Sunday morning and I needed coffee - in my defense, it was to play the ABC Duolingo game (see below!)

  • Clinton Street Baking Company: Finally got our text that our table was ready at 9:50am. I don't need to convince you all that it's a New York staple! I highly recommend getting the Banana walnut (sans walnut if you have allergies like us) and the sugar cured bacon. Was my Little One eating pancakes and fries at 10am?! Yes!. Did she also try the very first milkshake she's ever had? Of course! Were the tourists at the table next to us apalled with my mothering skills and decisions? ABSOLUTELY!

  • Koneko Cat Cafe: Yes... we went back there. We left Clinton Street at 10:45am and I figured, why not wait 15 mins for the Little One to play with some cats. So we head back to the cat cafe. Same guy 'greeted' us just as delightfully as before. We waited the 15 minutes and then asked to buy tickets to go in... to which he then decided to tell me that no kids under 8 years old can go in.................... now..... why he couldn't have told me that at 9:20am.. or even when we walked back in at 10:45am... is beyond me.

So.. I do NOT recommend planning a day to go to Koneko Cat Cafe. They apparently have 'kid friendly' hours, however he couldn't tell me when those times were. I checked the website and it looks like there are certain 30 minute blocks on Thursdays and Fridays only for kids.

Plan B? Trader Joes! We bought some pumpkins at the Lower East Side TJ's and then head to Seward Park to play in the enormous playground. Great big swings are there! They even have the 'big kid' swings, which I may have convinced my Little One to push me on.

All in all - it's worth heading up to Clinton Street for pancakes on a Sunday. Be prepared to wait for a table and don't bank on going to the cat cafe to wait out the time!
