Am I the only one who didn't realize the kids have mid-winter break next week?!
Well, i'm bracing myself and really hoping that the weather warms up so that we can go back to our regular exploring schedule. If only to finally have new ideas to share with you all!
Now, Lunar New Year is coming up next week - perfectly timed for the holiday break!
If you're looking for something to do with the Little Ones, I highly recommend heading to Golden Unicorn for Dim Sum. Sure, there are lots of options out there, but this is our go-to Dim Sum place close to home.
Growing up in Australia, going to Dim Sum on Sundays was our family tradition. So now we're having our own 'family' Dim Sum mornings with our chosen family friends!
If you haven't been before and a little intimidated to go with someone who's been before, consider this your cheat sheet:
- Walk into Golden Unicorn and find the woman with a walky talky - tell her how many people are in your party and she'll give you a number
- Even on the busiest days, you typically don't have to wait long - there are three floors of tables!
- When you sit, look out for the women pushing the carts around (they love kids btw and always love to chat when the kids are with you!)
-
My typical order:
- Steamed bbq pork buns (my absolute favorite)
- Shrimp har gow (a dumpling with shrimp inside)
- Shrimp rice noodles (... I don't know how to describe this....)
- Sticky pork dumpling (it's like a fried little football)
- Sticky fried rice (self explanatory)
- Sesame seed rice ball (a sweet fried ball of deliciousness)
- Egg custard tarts (get the traditional small ones, not the big ones)
You know what - get multiple orders of the steamed bbq pork buns - I love them so much that my Mum threatened me that i'd turn into one if I kept eating as much as I did as a kid. I've actually now said it to my Little One who is obsessed too
All else fails - ask them for the menu and you can point to what you want!
The best part of this meal? The kids can make as much noise as they want! It's a great place to take the kids and not stress about making sure your kids are on their best behavior. Take it from me, who has navigated many tantrums in there. Surprisingly they don't last long - I think it's because they get excited by the carts coming by constantly.
An alternative location:
- Dim Sum Go Go - A little less intimidating if you've never been to Dim Sum before. At this place they don't have the carts, so you just order off the menu with pictures
Oh! My "can't be bothered cooking dinner hack" is to have the frozen bbq pork buns in my freezer. When you leave, go around the corner to the Golden Unicorn Take Out location and pick up a box of frozen bbq pork buns that are super easy to reheat/steam at home.
