Hear me out...
I like to think that I'm not a sucker who gets roped into viral NYC trends and lines... but who are we kidding?!
I heard about Mary O's Irish Soda Bread Scones ages ago, when the lines were down the block. Now, I'll never line up around the block for anything, so of course I'm behind the trend and only made it there this past week.
It's controversial... especially because I am a fellow Commonwealther who obsesses over scones... but I didn't love them.
So we took the SBSM15 (surprise, surprise) uptown to the East Village, jumped off at 1st and Houston and walked just a few blocks away.
The plus side? The line isn't there anymore, so the wait for scones was at most, 5 minutes. Perfect when you have a HANGRY 4 year old tugging at your dress.
The down side? I probably wouldn't get them again.
What I want a scone to taste like:
- Light, fluffy and almost creamy texture (not dry!)
- Of course I add cream (clotted if I can) and some jam
What Mary O's Scones taste like:
- Butter. A lot, lot, lot of butter
- Dense and more butter
Initially I bought two scones with butter and jam (i.e., the works) - one bite and I couldn't do it anymore. In all fairness, I got back in line to buy another two scones on their own (no butter and jam). These were better. But still tasted a lot like butter.
I think if I hadn't gone in there with the expectation of traditional scones, then I would have liked the plain scones more.
I shared them with a fellow Mom back at the playground who loved them! She made a great observation... they're more like biscuits than scones! Sweet tasting biscuits.
Now it makes more sense why everyone was lining up down the block to eat them!!
