Asking for a friend...

I'm done with making resolutions every year. I'm not even going to pretend I even considered making one.

That said, I am trying to do more 'active' things with my little one. Which is near impossible with this brutally cold weather these days.

If you're close to the South Street Seaport though, I have discovered one hack...

The chess table at Kinship.

It's not life changing, nor is it really 'active', but it is only a minute walk from my apartment and they make an amazing oat milk cortado.

I'm not going to pretend my Little One can play chess. But what I do love, is watching her Dad having to play HER version of chess in public. What's her version you ask? Well they play 'neighbors' and each of the pieces 'come over' for play dates... the horsies get into fights protecting the castle and her Dad has to pretend his Queen needs to take a nap...

The plus side - she knows how to set up her side of the chess board without any help. I'll take that as a win.

Definitely get

  • For me: Oat milk cortado (bonus they don't charge extra for oat milk)
  • For him: Iced black americano
  • For the little one: Hot chocolate (made not too hot)
  • To eat: The Banderillas (puff pastry with sugar, simple and amazing)
  • To eat: The Conchas (I'm always so happy when I remember they're not filled)

Skip

  • The pour overs unless you want to spend $12 on one coffee (... not me...)

I love the big windows and natural light in the cafe. The aesthetic is less than family friendly - it almost feels like they've designed it so that kids don't come! It doesn't discourage us though - you're going to see us there pretty much every day while this brutal weather is happening.

What we are doing this weekend...

Bryant Park Bumper Cars on Ice

I will recommend this to you all EVERY SINGLE YEAR!

I went pre-baby on a surprise date that David planned and it was hands down the best fun ever.

It's for kids that 7+ years old... so my Little One still can't go, but you better believe that I'm sneaking there on opening day on Friday while my Little One is at school...

What we are doing this week...

"Fragile Giants" exhibit in Murray Hill

Disclaimer - we're planning to go only because it's right by one of our doctors appointment. I'm not sure I'd go up to see this in this cold blistering weather. Wait until it's warmer.

When: On now until May

What I really want to do this week...

Family Music Showcase at Lincoln Center

My only hesitation? It's three hours long! I'm not sure my 4 year old would make it through, but I do still want to go...

And another thing for the weekend...

Jewish Children's Book Festival

I love book festivals! Not to mention I'll take any excuse for a subway excursion to the upper east side.

What sounds pretty cool this week...

Break a Guinness book of Record in Central Park

My eyebrow is raised, but apparently they're trying to break a record by hosting the largest ice skating lesson.......

What we are reading this week...

The Supertato Treasury- By Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet

This may be a terrible recommendation because the books are hard to find in the US, but we are in love with this series. We discovered it in London over the summer and I wish I got more books in the series. I don't know what it is about them, but they're really fun to read out loud!

What saved my sanity this week ...

Cotton Candy Machine

This was clearly an impulse purchase at Duane Reade when I supposed to only be buying Christmas wrapping paper (I blame the 50% discount sign), but boy oh boy have I got use out of it! I absolutely LOVE it and who knew that a whole cotton candy stick is just a teaspoon of sugar?! I'm even guilty of already bringing it to movie night for a playdate!

What I am obsessed with this week ...

Franklin's BBQ - delivered by Goldbelly

I haven't been to Austin. Even I went to Austin, I'm not lining up for 4 hours to eat at Franklins. But I really want to try their brisket. During the Black Friday they had 25% off sale. Let me tell you - it's not cheap, however this is a decent chunk of meat - and honestly, it's comparable to buying the same cut (not famously seasoned and cooked!) at Dickson's meat.

Admittedly we haven't cooked it yet, so I will need to report back, but unpacking it today I was super impressed with what they sent
